The Mermaid’s Bardo

In collaboration with photographer Carole Fievetz.

In the midday sun on a hot summer day she came out of the water. The surface of the ocean was glittering, seemed to be made of silver.

She didn’t know where she was. The beach looked unfamiliar, with giant cliffs surrounding it from all sides. There was no human being; when she lied down on the shore to rest, she saw a body of a dead crab next to her. Pulled back and forth by waves crashing on the shore.

She didn’t remember where she came from. The only image in her memory was water, overwhelming water, from all sides, all around her, and within her.

Did she run away from somewhere, someone? Was she lost and left alone in the midst of the ocean? Did she swim from another shore in the search for new home? Or maybe, was she born among the waves and for the first time put her foot on land?

She didn’t remember her name, she didn’t remember her face. The reflection in the water kept moving; she tried to recognise her features by touch, follow the facial lines – but everything seemed blurry.

She walked across the beach, burning her feet of the hot sand and stones, until she found a mirror. Broken into pieces, it was standing there, against the rock, reflecting the deformed reality.

She looked into the mirror, but still couldn’t really see her image – the sun was reflecting in the glass, blinding her eyes.

She kept trying to watch herself, hoping that in the depth of her eyes she will find the reflection of the past, or the vision of the future.

She didn’t find the answers. The mirror confused her even more.

The voice of waves kept calling her back. Instinctively, she walked back towards the shore, and walked further and further, until her dress danced around her legs, until her hair danced around her head, until there was no glittering sun in her eyes anymore, until the depths took her back home.

The project was created in July 2023 on one of the secret beaches of Portugal.
